I thought it was a bit strange. I just thought it was delayed transactions and didn't "inappropriate" much of it. Confirmed cards used after our departure date. My bank stated skimming was things ask first date big issue in tourists spots world wide especially in SE Asia.

We are usually very careful and cover up when taking money from ATMs but obviously the crooks are one or two steps ahead. I'm back again in Vietnam in just over a month and i'd just become confident using a debit card.

Maz - Usually a skimming card reader is placed over the ATM's card input reader, and it can be hard to detect. A good bank will examine it's ATM's on a regular basis.

Daawgon, unfortunately even those ATMs are often targetted - because of that excact reason. People feel saver using these ATMs. People laways look at me a biut surprised when I feel around the card opening of an ATM - as you might feel if anything is put on top of it.

Obviously, it could have happened at the Duty Free store as well as rayza might have implied. I ´never hadn over my card - if the machine is not in front of me I don't pay by card. As sson someone walks away with it they have all the time of the world to skim the card, taking a picture of the numbers etc.

Sometimes I feel a bit paranoid, but as I have worked on that area I learned to be very careful knowing what can go wrong is not always a good thing!!! Unfortunately this 18 inappropriate things ask first date not unique to Vietnam or even to the use of ATM machines, which is why we should check our accounts frequently for fraudulent charges and notify the banks immediately when fraudulent withdrawals or charges are found.

Last month while sitting in the comfort of my San Diego home and not having traveled for months, I received a text warning from my bank of a possible fraudulent credit card charge. The card that was used for the charge was happily sitting in my wallet with me.

ATM and credit card fraud can happen anyplace. John - I've seen a TV commercial for the first "chip" credit card in the States - Visa seems to be leading the pack. What has taken the US so long? The credit card on which the fraudulent charge was attempted was a chip card, but in the US they're initially going to a chip and signature rather than chip and pin - don't know why this is.

However, I believe the number of the card were likely written down at a local restaurant chain, since that's the only place the card had been out of sight. While chip and pin cards are a big step forward, it doesn't help for on-line purchases where other security measures need to be used. CB - it's all about money!

It will cost millions, maybe billions, for the millions of card machines to be replaced. Unfortunately, even if you have a chip and pin card, in Vietnam they are useless. Simply, because Vietnam ATM's only use the magnetic strip on the back.

The chip side might as well not exist. Only problem is that usually when I go to places like VietnamI obtain a local sim, so that safeguard, to a degree, disappears. And yes, even bank ATM's are not totally secure. I can recall seeing a police video of a gang attaching such a device to an ATM located at a bank.

All you can do is look for strange devices etc. When in doubt, don't use them. All of your saved places can be found here in My Trips. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Log in Join Recently viewed Bookings Inbox. Be careful of ATM skimming!!! Browse all 6, Hoi An topics ».
